Danny Trevino from UISD has some video of one of their buses which burned. The bus was engulfed in black smoke in a couple of minutes and I'm sure if kids were on board it would have been difficult to evacuate them under those conditions, but I think it can be done quickly. Elementary kids taught twice a year is more than enough and when they get to the secondary level they already have practiced in many cases for several years. Obviously, there are pros and cons with both options. However, as a district with 100% diesel engine buses, I am glad that the market provides engine retrofits and manufactured cleaner emission engines. The tremendous cost in personnel, fuel, and time to comply placed all budgets in financial strains. There has to be a way that Legislators can help....even if its through the Department of Homeland Security. Maybe consider reducing the training to once a year? ... study this matter throughly with the group..surely, there is a way to reduce the burden placed on districts....Price of diesel/gas next go round might be $5 or $6..who knows?
