I don't want anyone to think that evacuation training is not important, but too much of a good thing can be bad. Danny Trevino from UISD has some video of one of their buses which burned. The bus was engulfed in black smoke in a couple of minutes and I'm sure if kids were on board it would have been difficult to evacuate them under those conditions, but I think it can be done quickly. Elementary kids taught twice a year is more than enough and when they get to the secondary level they already have practiced in many cases for several years. At least we can do away with Middle or High School trainings.

All of a sudden this evacuation has become a big issue. I know it's very important for student to know what to do. Yet, I think someone is taking this to far.

Propane vs Diesel is a (per district) issue. As a proponent of cleaner air, I am glad that we have options. Obviously, there are pros and cons with both options. However, as a district with 100% diesel engine buses, I am glad that the market provides engine retrofits and manufactured cleaner emission engines. I agree with Mr. Cano, discussions are very healthy amongst school officials to determine what is best for our children's environment.

Mr. Contreras, remember that Rome was not built over night. All the issues that you mention were brought up. Those were the issues that were in the agenda to start with. We are trying to bring it down to once a year. We understand that the funding is not there yet. It's the same thing as the seat belts when ever we get there. So far there are no fundings from the state for the seat belts. Between fuel, evacuatins, seat belts and driver shortage, we might be in lots of problems in the future. Mr. Cano, at your meeting at Portland, make mention of the State's Emergency Evacuation law that is yet another example of Legislation without funding from the state. The tremendous cost in personnel, fuel, and time to comply placed all budgets in financial strains. There has to be a way that Legislators can help....even if its through the Department of Homeland Security. Maybe consider reducing the training to once a year? ... study this matter throughly with the group..surely, there is a way to reduce the burden placed on districts....Price of diesel/gas next go round might be $5 or $6..who knows? O.K. STAPT members, I just spoke to Mr. Benavidez and we discussed the issue of Saturday's training. Being that nothing has been done or said about the training until yesterday. We both feel like we are not ready for a training meeting more less a Road-eo. We have decided that there will be NO meeting this Saturday and just let each district send their drivers to Corpus on their own. Have to understand that the committee that was formed to help with the Road-eo needs also the input of all members in which it did not happened. The committee can not be expected to run the whole show. We have over fifty members in all. But five or six can not do it alone. I am sorry but there will be NO TRAINING ON SATURDAY, 4-12-08. Maybe we can discuss this at the Kings Inn on the 18th with those who will attend. I am sorry Mr. Contreras. ESC 1, Fidela Hinojosa is to be congratulated for a very successful emergency bus evacuation training session on Sat., Nov. 3rd at the La Joya Transportation Complex 8:00-noon. Forty-four were in attendance...20-L.J., Mercedes-2, Roma-4, Ninos 1, Raymondville-2,Donna-3, Zapata-3, Santa Rosa-1, Laredo United 5, Harlingen-2, unknown district-1. Data was very instructional and shared freely in participant interactions. All of us and our children are to benefit from this gathering. "This session is to provide you with training materials that can be taken back to your District and presented by either your own transportation staff or campus adminstration."
